GOOD NEW AS GMC’s Sports Medicine Program is not just for athletes—it helps people of all ages and abilities return to active, healthy lives A Jim Wallace was able to enjoy his favorite activities again just a few short months after surgery to repair his injured left shoulder. s a building contractor specializing in custom homes and renovations, Jim Wallace had a 29-year spotless safety record. But in June 2010, as he worked on an overhead beam, he gave a push on a tight lag screw, which unexpectedly gave way. Suddenly the ladder kicked out. “I came down between the rafters,” he says, “and my wedding ring caught on a ceiling joist.” He dangled for maybe a half-second, long enough to jerk the weight of his entire body through his left shoulder. The damage to his joint was done before he even hit the ground. “I knew it was torn up pretty good,” Wallace adds. GOING TO GMC Wallace trusted his injury to David Stokes, M.D., a boardcertiﬁed orthopedic surgeon afﬁliated with Gwinnett Medical Center’s Sports Medicine Program, and his surgery was performed at the Outpatient Surgery Center at GMC–Duluth. “Over the years I’ve had four surgeries at Gwinnett Medical Center’s facilities,” Wallace says.
