Comfort and Care for High-Risk Pregnancies If mom requires a prolonged hospital stay during her pregnancy or after delivery, the staff at the Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion is specially trained to care for physical and emotional needs during this important time. The high-risk pregnancy unit has 12 dedicated beds and is designed with all the comforts of home: a private bath, refrigerator, microwave, Wi-Fi service, desk/ workstation, DVD player and laptops for use during the patient’s stay. Care is provided by collaboration between board-certified neonatologists and specialized clinical staff, which allows for sick newborns to receive state-of-the-art care close to where their parents live. “We perform prenatal consultations for high-risk pregnancies,” Brazell says. “And we have a NICU team for high-risk births. Our goal is to offer the best care to our tiny patients so that they can go home to their families.” GWP’s NICU was also the first hospital to offer Beads of Courage, a therapeutic program, to preemie families. Babies start with a string and beads to spell their first name. Then, for every test or treatment in the NICU, they receive a bead. The unique strand of beads represents their courageous journeys. “We hope you won’t need our NICU services for a premature baby.” Brazell adds, “But, if you do, know that at Gwinnett Medical Center, we not only care for your babies during their stays, but also care about them for the rest of their lives.” STRONG BONDS By the time NICU infants are discharged, the staff at the Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion has developed a very special relationship with them and their families. Every year the staff holds a Preemie Reunion to celebrate the babies as they grow and thrive.
