Join Us for the NICU Reunion Ace Yates of New Albany isn’t too sure about getting the bottom of his foot painted during the 2010 North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Reunion. For a $20 donation to the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi’s NICU Patient Assistance Fund, families could honor their NICU graduate with a tile on the Little Miracles Wall at Women’s Hospital. The son of Shawn and Jenni Yates, Ace was born eight weeks early on Feb. 16, 2010. More than 400 individuals, including NICU graduates, their families and Women’s Hospital staff members, attended the biennial event. Maya Irvin enjoyed the “Pick Up Ducks” game at North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Hospital 2010 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Reunion. The daughter of Matthew and Cindy Irvin, Maya was born two months early on Aug. 14, 2009, weighing 3 pounds, 9 ounces. Cayden and Hayden Hopper of Ripley enjoyed visiting with “Woody,” also known as neonatologist Bryan Darling, M.D., during the 2010 North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Reunion. The twins were born Sept. 29, 2008, to Andy and Denise Hopper, with Cayden weighing 2 pounds, 12 ounces, and Hayden weighing 3 pounds, 8 ounces. The NMMC Women’s Hospital invites all Neonatal Intensive Care Unit “graduates” and their families to a reunion from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 18. The free event offers refreshments, games and prizes, but the main draw is to see the progress these children have made. “Our staff becomes extremely attached to these babies because many of them spend a great deal of time in our intensive care nursery before they are able to go home with their parents,” says Bryan Darling, M.D., one of four neonatologists at Women’s Hospital. “We look forward to seeing them return for a visit.” Additional neonatologists on staff are John Nading, M.D., Patrick O’Mara, M.D., and Dennis Wright, M.D. The entire nursery staff and respiratory therapists plan this event together to make it as much fun as possible for former patients and their families. Staff members who work closely with the infants and their families say it’s like planning an event for a huge extended family. The 34-bed intensive care nursery treats patients born at the Women’s Hospital as well as those transferred in from other area hospitals by CareExpress neonatal transport ambulance. More than 300 infants are admitted to the NICU annually, and more than one-fourth of them are transported to Tupelo from area hospitals. The neonatal transport team includes registered nurses who specialize in neonatal intensive care as well as respiratory therapists.
