Cancer Now what? Here’s to a Healthy Future After kicking cancer to the curb, your No. 1 priority is staying healthy. “You have to understand what makes your body healthy and do away with things that cause it harm,” says Jim Drewitz, 60, a two-time cancer survivor who has cut all sugar from his diet. Proper diet and frequent exercise are essential. Plus, both have the added ability of battling fatigue, a common long-term side effect of cancer, says Michele Galioto, R.N., director of education for the Oncology Nursing Society. Load your plate with fruits and veggies, take a daily walk and throw out those cigarettes for good. “You have to take control of your wellness and change your lifestyle,” Drewitz says. B eating cancer is no easy feat. Just ask Jim Drewitz. He survived cancer not once but twice—first a cancer in his upper throat and then lung cancer. And he’s grateful for each and every day. “The fear is always that you’re never going to live as long as you thought you should,” he says. “Be thankful for what has been given to you and move on from there.” That is easier said than done for most cancer survivors. Up until now, you have had a clear enemy (cancer!) and a clear goal (defeat it!). Now that treatment has ended and the time between doctor appointments has grown, you may find yourself struggling to figure out what to do next. But there is life after cancer. Let our experts—and real cancer survivors—show you the way.
