Hutchinson he opening of our two new Medical Plazas this past spring brought an exciting next-level of imaging technology to the St. Anthony Medical Campus. Three comprehensive services in these walkway-connected buildings are prime examples of advances available for accurate screening, rapid diagnostics and unparalleled treatment options. In the new St. Anthony Breast Center, two-dimensional digital mammography is now augmented by three-dimensional breast tomosynthesis. Ours is among the first such systems in the region, and it’s from Hologic, a technology resource specializing in women’s health. Approved by the FDA for both screening and diagnostic mammography, it provides our board-certified radiologists a critical third plane view for more precise readings. As our Breast Center medical director Ray Mencini, M.D., explains, “Contrast what you see in a picture of a circle with that of a ball—that’s the difference the additional dimension makes.” In the St. Anthony Outpatient Imaging Center, state-of-the-art positron emission tomography (PET) scans have joined CT, MRI, X-ray and ultrasound in the imaging spectrum. A type of nuclear medicine imaging, PET scans can measure organ and tissue functions such as blood flow, oxygen use and metabolism— critical for the diagnosis and management of certain brain and heart disorders. Our equipment is exceptional in that it combines PET and CT functions to make it a powerful cancer diagnostic and management tool, as well. For those being treated in our new Cancer Center, it will prove an important advantage. In the new St. Anthony Cancer Center, we’re taking imaging to the fourth dimension—which is time. It’s a function of our Novalis Tx/RapidArc treatment—a powerful “next-generation” radiotherapy system that can deliver a tumor-destroying beam with unprecedented speed and accuracy. Our radiation oncologists are now able to synchronize delivery of the beams with the patient’s own respiratory cycle. Such precise timing means a higher dose of radiation can target cancerous tumors and remain targeted as the patient inhales and exhales, ensuring that healthy surrounding tissue is spared.
