In July 2009, for example, he made a special visit to the Great Ormond Street Hospital. In costume as Captain Jack Sparrow, he spent an afternoon delighting young patients and hospital staff members. Depp is also one of many celebrities who have participated in Sophie’s Gift, a database of recorded messages from celebrities to help coma patients and raise money for new equipment. He reportedly agreed to participate after the parents of a comatose teen reached out to him as their daughter’s favorite celebrity. “What Depp realizes is something many people don’t: You can give a lot without giving a dollar,” McGinly says. “Volunteering your time and talents can enhance a hospital’s ability to provide important services to patients and the community and, in some cases, offset expenses, allowing them to use those dollars for something else.” In addition, the actor has donated items to be auctioned for charity, including a pair of his underwear, which raised $3,000 for the Helen & Douglas House, a U.K. charity that provides respite and endof-life care for children and young adults. He even reunited with his high school band, The Kids, in August 2008 to perform two charity concerts benefiting The Dan Marino Foundation, which supports children and young adults who have special needs. “Depp has taken something he loves— music—and turned it into a way to help a good cause,” Jamal says.
