Opening ThoughTs Working Together We are a well-educated community, from our grade schools to our colleges and universities I am pleased to say that things seem to be looking up for Brevard County. Home sales have seen an increase and new businesses are moving into the area, slowly but surely. In fact, companies are finally realizing they can use Brevard County’s highly skilled and educated workforce if they move their businesses here. For example, Utah rocket and aerospace technology company Rocket Crafters moved to North Brevard in July 2012. According to the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, the company will invest $72 million to support operations at the Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville. When the company is at full employment, the total economic impact is estimated to be more than $48 million. That’s good news for everyone in North Brevard. Our excellent schools are a big asset, too. With 98 percent of Brevard schools receiving a grade of A or B, Brevard Public Schools is ranked third out of 74 school districts in the state. Brevard County has nine colleges and universities. The nursing and other healthcare-related programs are doing well and graduating excellent healthcare professionals. Parrish Medical Center (PMC) benefits directly from our excellent schools. Many students begin their healthcare interests in high school. They may do their clinical training at PMC in their college programs. Those completing nursing programs often apply for a chance to participate in our graduate nurse-training program—the only such program in the area. And once they have experienced the PMC healing environment, many wish to stay after graduation and work here. The school relationships benefit everyone. Our auxiliary and the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation offer college scholarships each year to students in North Brevard who are studying in a human healthcare field. At this special time of year, I also want to invite you to our annual Gift of Light celebration on Dec. 2 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Bring your family for a truly spectacular tree-lighting ceremony filled with good friends, good tidings and much more. Each light on the 50-foot tree, provided courtesy of the Parrish Medical Center Auxiliary, is dedicated in memory or honor of an individual or a family.
