Gretchen hayward, diagnostic Breast navigator, and donna Stoudenmire, Breast health navigator NavigatioN iN actioN Karen Grant came to Gwinnett medical center after she felt a lump in her breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer. She needed advanced treatment options but wanted compassionate care from the area’s best cancer team. that’s when she met donna Stoudenmire, Gmc’s breast health navigator. “we sat down and talked about her diagnosis,” Stoudenmire says. “we talked about what was coming next.” adds Grant: “She was actually a godsend. donna said she was there to help me every step of the way. true to her word, on my first day of chemo, donna was there to hold my hand, and she has never stopped.” Grant underwent surgery, and doctors were able to remove the cancer. Gretchen Hayward, a certified diagnostic breast navigator, and Donna Stoudenmire, a certified breast health navigator, understand that navigating the medical system can be confusing and overwhelming. Through the navigation program, Hayward and Stoudenmire meet one-on-one with patients, families and caregivers to promote informed decision making. “Cancer treatment is most successful when we are able to address everything that is going on with the patient—meeting their mental, physical and spiritual needs,” Stoudenmire says. “Often, patients have questions, and I am here to assist them in finding the answers.” Hayward helps patients through the diagnostic process. She serves as a patient advocate, coordinating appointments as well as communicating with specialists and the patient’s physician. Stoudenmire helps patients and their families understand treatment options and what their diagnosis means. Hayward and Stoudenmire are a patient’s primary contacts throughout the experience at GMC. They are available to ensure that breast cancer patients are in command of their treatment plan and that their journeys go as smoothly and as timely as possible. They are there for patients at diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care, calling them on a regular basis to address their requests and concerns and helping their healthcare teams stay informed on their progress.
