Someone to Guide You If you’re diagnosed with breast cancer, you’ll ﬁnd the help you need at PMC Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow. “Your mammogram is suspicious.” Those four words can invoke fear, anxiety, uncertainty and confusion. Although 80 percent of suspicious ﬁ ndings on mammograms are not cancer, the time between hearing it is suspicious and getting the ﬁnal diagnosis may seem like an eternity. When most women ﬁnd themselves in this position, they don’t have a clue what to do next. That’s why Parrish Medical Center (PMC) added a breast health navigator to its cancer care program six years ago speciﬁcally to help women through this scary time. PMC’s navigator, Marsha Richardson, is a certiﬁed oncology nurse and certiﬁed breast health navigator. NATIONAL RECOGNITION In fact, Richardson was honored earlier this year for her stellar work for PMC when she was named the 2013 Certiﬁed Breast Cancer Navigator of the Year by the Oncology Nursing Certiﬁcation Corp. She was recognized during the breakfast at the Oncology Nursing Society’s annual congress in Washington, D.C. The society is one of the largest specialty nursing organizations in the world, with more than 35,000 registered nurses and other healthcare providers dedicated to excellence in patient care, education, research and administration Nurse Diane Lowry (left) is doing great after her breast cancer treatment. Breast health navigator Marsha Richardson was there for her with reassurance and reliable information during her journey. 6 FA L L 2 013
