OUT OF THE WHITE COAT Dr. Fix-It Outdoors enthusiast and orthopedic surgeon enjoys putting things back together W ith more than 23 years of experience, Mary Jo Albert, M.D., is a boardcertiﬁed orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic surgery and total joint replacement. A partner at Resurgens Orthopaedics, Dr. Albert worked her way through college, working in a lab during the school year and in a paper mill during the summer. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in bacteriology from the University of WisconsinMadison and continued with graduate-level coursework and research. Dr. Albert’s medical degree is from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, where she also completed her residency. Afterward, she completed a fellowship at Emory University/Grady Memorial Hospital, specializing in orthopedic traumatology, primarily complex pelvis and hip fractures. She then completed an AO/ASIF trauma fellowship in Munich, Germany. AO/ASIF is an international Mary Jo Albert, M.D., enjoys horseback riding and other outdoor activities with husband Jim Crooks. 54 SPRING 2 013 Meet Mary Jo Albert, M.D. Practice: Resurgens Orthopaedics Specialties: Orthopedic surgery, total joint replacement Medical school: University of Wisconsin Years practiced: 23 (13 at GMC) Birthplace: Richmond, Ind. organization that promotes new methods of fracture care in the management of trauma patients. After nine years at Emory and Grady, she joined Resurgens, where her focus transitioned from acute fracture care to reconstructive surgery, including hip and knee replacement. Dr. Albert was the ﬁrst doctor in Gwinnett to perform anterior hip replacement, which is a recent innovation that allows patients the chance to recover more quickly. Outside of the white coat, Dr. Albert has two horses that she enjoys riding, and a miniature schnauzer named Greta. Bicycling, backcountry skiing, windsurﬁng, Pilates and travel are priorities for Dr. Albert and her two grown stepchildren and her husband. Recent outdoor sports destinations include Alaska, Maine, Northern California, Colorado and Massachusetts.
