1 When I was a child, I dreamed of becoming an engineer or architect overseeing miles-long bridge construction projects. Nathan Mordel, MD In his own words 2 3 My first job was as a nurses aide, during medical school, working night shifts in hospital wards. 4 I realized I wanted to be a doctor when I watched my mom, an internal medicine physician, practicing medicine and taking care of her family. The deep satisfaction she had interacting with patients was my main motivation to become a doctor. If I weren’t a doctor, I would be an engineer like my dad. 5 6 My favorite restaurants are Tamarind and Nan Thai. 8 My favorite television shows are CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, PBS NewsHour, Discovery nature programs and Animal Planet programs. 7 Right now on my iPod, I’m listening to Tchaikovsky and opera by Verdi. My inspiration is my patients. The ability to make their surgical recovery much better than they would expect makes my day. I always claim, “A happy patient means a happy doctor.” 9 My first car was a tiny Fiat 127. 10 To unwind after a long day I have a nice, long dinner with my wife. SUMM ER 2013 55
