* Wear sunglasses daily. They don't need to be
expensive, but choose a pair that blocks 99 to 100
percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. (Look for
"broad spectrum" protection.)
* If you wear contact lenses, choose some that offer
UV protection. Be aware that not all contact lenses
offer this and that there are varying levels of absorption available. Ask your eye care professional for
more information.
* Consider wrap-around sunglasses and widebrimmed hats. These add extra protection because
they help block UV rays from entering the eyes from
the sides and above.
* Choose a hat with a dark color and a tightly
woven fabric, such as canvas. These work best for
UV protection. Avoid straw hats with holes that let
sunlight through.

rotection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation
is important year-round, as much for your
eyes as your skin.
UV rays from the sun can reach you on
cloudy and hazy days, not just bright and sunny ones.
They can reflect off surfaces like water, cement, sand
and snow. And obviously, you're exposed to them
through indoor tanning (tanning beds and booths).
UV radiation, whether from natural sunlight or
artificial UV rays, can damage your eyes and affect
surface tissues and internal structures, such as the
cornea and lens.
Every person in every ethnic group is susceptible
to eye damage from UV radiation. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can lead to cataracts, skin cancer around the eyelids, burns on the front surface of
the eye, and other eye disorders.
From late spring to early summer, between 9 a.m.
and 3 p.m. is the most hazardous time for UV ray
exposure. Because you may be inclined to spend
more time outside this time of year, consider the following tips to protect your eyes from UV damage.
