OUT OF THE WHITE COAT A Man for All Seasons Sports medicine doctor cherishes time with family and friends T homas F. Byars, MD, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He went on to complete his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was elected pediatric chief resident, and his fellowship in pediatric sports medicine at the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute. Dr. Byars has practiced pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine in the metro Atlanta area for seven years, and he now serves as the medical director for the Concussion Institute at Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth. In addition, he has led the medical team for more than a dozen sports teams and events, including the NCAA Men's Division I basketball tournament (ﬁrst and second rounds), Tucker and Shiloh high schools, Druid Hills Youth Sports, and Gwinnett Soccer Association. Dr. Byars has been a part of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics Georgia Chapter, and the American Academy of Pediatrics' Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. When he is not working, Dr. Byars enjoys spending quality time with his wife, Leslie, and his three children, Jackson, Anne Clark and Lanier.
