WEBSITE Rehab at PCRMC Velma Rohrer takes steps during physical therapy with the assistance of Teresa Smith, physical therapist. VELMA ROHRER 36 SP RIN G 2015 Once at PCRMC, Velma remained an inpatient from the middle of July to September 2013. "When she first began rehabilitation therapy at PCRMC, she could not scratch her nose or move her fingers," George says, "but Velma has always been a fighter. She kept trying, and eventually she began to regain a little movement in her upper body." Velma has worked extensively with PCRMC Outpatient Therapy for a year and a half. She goes to therapy twice a week for an hour at a time. "One of Velma's doctors called her a 'miracle in progress,'" George says. "She continues to make progress every day, and she is an inspiration to so many people. Velma gives it her all and doesn't hold back." Velma's resilience has paid off. She has now regained movement in her upper body, and she is now able to walk short distances with the assistance of a therapist and a walker during physical therapy. The Rohrers attribute Velma's success to two things: their faith in God and the wonderful people who work at PCRMC. "There is a sense of caring here," Velma says. "The attitude of caring at PCRMC goes beyond just performing a duty or a service. This caring attitude permeates throughout the entire hospital, from department to department, from employee to employee. The services at PCRMC surpass others because the people here create an atmosphere for getting better." George agrees. "PCRMC stands out above the rest. We have been to the large healthcare organizations in other places," he says. "Anyplace can provide a service, but what is so unique about Rolla is the positive environment created by the employees. From the moment you walk in, you matter. Our experience here has been nothing but positive. The adage is true: Actions speak louder than words, and PCRMC goes above and beyond what we ever expected." I PHOTOS BY HILLARY MACCASH Velma and George Rohrer have been married for almost 50 years. They are best friends who enjoy attending church and singing gospel music together. The Rohrers live 30 minutes outside of Salem in Shannon County. On May 28, 2013, right before bedtime, Velma fell in her home and sustained an incomplete spinal cord injury, meaning she was paralyzed from the neck down. From the time of her accident until the middle of July, Velma remained in intensive care at Cox in Springfield. George was driving to and from their home to the hospital, and the trip became difficult. "I could not be there for her as much as I wanted to be since I was over three hours away," George says. "I knew that Rolla was a good hospital, so I looked into having her relocated closer to home." George says he and Velma discussed a plan with a representative at PCRMC to move Velma to the second floor of the hospital to continue her recovery. We truly feel that the decision to move her to Rolla was meant to be." Are PCRMC Outpatient Therapy services right for you?
