Adopt-a-Grandparent

S
outhwest Baptist University students
Olivia and Lisa, along with their adoptive grandparents, look forward to
seeing each other on a weekly basis.
For the students, it's a chance to connect with a generation they may have not met or
worked with. The partnership through SBU and
Butterfield Residential Care Center aims to build
relationships among young college students and
elderly residents through social interaction.
For some SBU students such as Olivia, the
best way to build a relationship with anyone is
to laugh. Olivia and her "grandmother," BRCC
resident Annabelle, enjoy laughing together as
they share life experiences. They both grew up
in large families and love music. Annabelle and
Olivia enjoy playing Scrabble because they both
understand the power of making up words. Of
course, this sentiment is immediately followed
by laughter.

Olivia and Annabelle spend
quality time together through the
Adopt-a-Grandparent program.
BRCC resident Alene and her "granddaughter," SBU student Lisa, enjoy getting to know
one another through various activities. Whether
it's eating lunch together, taking in an art class
at BRCC or simply talking about life, these two
ladies have a special connection. Both come
from large families and have a knack for making
the other laugh. They describe one another as
"caring, loving and genuinely nice." Alene says
that without the burden of cooking and washing
dishes, she has plenty of time to get to know
Lisa and share her life experiences.
In 2014, the Adopt-a-Grandparent program
will begin its third year, thanks to SBU wellness
center director and instructor of kinesiology J.D.
Lynch and the BRCC staff. Students and residents
have been positively impacted by the program,
with many staying in touch well beyond the end
of the class.
