UNC HEALTH CARE NEWS Two distinguished researchers at UNC Health Care have been elected to the Institute of Medicine, considered one of the highest honors for those in the fields of health and medicine. Myron S. Cohen, MD, J. Herbert Bate Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology, and Epidemiology and associate vice chancellor for global health, and Terry R. Magnuson, PhD, Sarah Graham Kenan Professor Myron S. Cohen, MD and chair of the Department of Genetics, are among the 70 new members announced by the institute. For the past 30 years, Dr. Cohen has researched the transmission and prevention of HIV. His many accomplishments include his role as principal investigator of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 052 Trial, which was recognized as the 2011 “Breakthrough of the Year” by Science magaTerry R. Magnuson, zine, and his service as chief of the Division PhD of Infectious Diseases since 1990. Dr. Magnuson is director of the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences, creator of the Cancer Genetics Program in the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and vice dean of research at the UNC School of Medicine. He has worked in the Magnuson lab to publish more than 150 research papers, focused on topics such as genomic imprinting and X-chromosome inactivation. Drs. Cohen and Magnuson were elected to the Institute of Medicine by current members for their accomplishments and contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health. New Physician-in-Chief of N.C. Cancer Hospital Announced Lisa A. Carey, MD, a nationally recognized clinical researcher and physician, was appointed chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the UNC School of Medicine and physician-in-chief of the N.C. Cancer Hospital. Dr. Carey, a member of the UNC faculty for more than 10 years, is the Richardson and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor in Breast Cancer Research, professor of medicine and associate director for Clinical Research at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Dr. Carey is exactly the right leader for these key roles,” says William L. Roper, MD, MPH, dean of the UNC School of Medicine and CEO of UNC Health Care. “This is an area of great importance to our health care system and to the people of North Carolina.” As division chief, Dr. Carey will be responsible for the overall administration of the division, including clinical practice, educational activities, research programs, fiscal management and meeting the missions of patient care, research and education. As physician-in-chief, Dr. Carey will oversee the clinical operations of the N.C. Cancer Hospital and will work with Shelley Earp, MD, director of UNC Lineberger and UNC Cancer Care, to coordinate care of patients throughout the UNC Health Care System.
