In 2013, for the first time ever, 3-year-old Grayson Clamp of Charlotte, N.C., heard the joyful sounds of Christmas morning, thanks to groundbreaking surgery at UNC Health Care. Nine months after an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) by Craig Buchman, MD, FACS, division chief of Otology/Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery, and Matthew Ewend, MD, FACS, chair, Department of Neurosurgery, Grayson not only can hear but is continuing to develop his own words. "He's making slow and steady progress, which is what we expect," says Dr. Buchman, "and overall his progress is really good. He certainly hears and has environmental awareness.
