Pumping with a conventional truck temporarily reduces the effectiveness of the system, removing helpful bacteria and wasting hundreds of gallons of water. The Juggler trucks, on the other hand, separate solid waste and grease, and return bacteria flora to the system during servicing. Not only that, Potter points out, but with less wastewater to cart around, bluewater is able to reduce its carbon footprint by 54 percent while doing something that is biologically beneficial. Plus, it operates free of chemicals and pollutants. It also saves the customer money. “If we can solve a problem in an environmental way that’s also at a lower cost, it’s a win-win situation,” Potter says. “You can be a good steward of the Earth and do business in a way that’s cheaper if you’re smart about it.” Chris Sousa, a senior account manager for the company, also is passionate about the company’s environmental focus. “When I was making a choice about what to do with my life, I wanted to try to help people,” he says. “It’s nice to be with a company that concentrates on being green — that tries to take care of the Earth and people, too.” bout 20 percent of all housing units in the U.S. depend on a septic system, and, when well maintained, a septic system is self-sufficient, highly efficient and able to withstand heavy rains and flash flooding. But, as any condo owner knows, when there’s a problem with the system, it can lead to leaks and other wastewater issues. Based in Needham, Mass., bluewater™ is well equipped to take care of problems, before or after they occur. Chairman and CEO Dan Potter, who saw an opportunity in the New England wastewater management industry and decided to begin acquiring small companies in the industry and investing in equipment, founded the company in 2005. “In general, the industry hasn’t changed in 40 years,” he says. “I wanted to bring a new level of professionalism to it. I knew there were a lot of good, small independents out there and that we could gain synergies from the companies we acquired.” Today, bluewater is a full-service operation covering all of New England, providing everything from pumping services and system construction to small repairs, drain cleaning, sewer jetting and cleaning grease traps. “We want to be the single point of contact for all wastewater issues,” Potter says. Smarter, Cleaner, Greener At the core of bluewater’s corporate philosophy is a commitment to safe and environmentally friendly techniques. Among these techniques is the use of recycler technology in servicing wastewater systems. A Pioneer of Trenchless Technology In addition to the Juggler recycling trucks, bluewater is a pioneer in New England of a revolutionary new repair technique known as Trenchless Technology. This innovative pipe-lining technology, developed by NuFlow, enables bluewater to rehabilitate the infrastructure of deteriorated or failing water piping systems with a minimum of disruption to homes and landscaping. “It’s like angioplasty for pipes,” Potter explains. “What used to happen in condos was that if a root grew into a pipe or if it was disintegrating with all the caustic stuff that goes down into it, we’d have to tear up walls and ceilings and dig up the landscaping. Now, we can make a strategic cut and line the pipe with an epoxy that’s good for 50 years.” The technology is actually not a new one. In the 1960s, the military developed the epoxy for use on ships, such as aircraft carriers, to protect them from the ravages of seawater. “It’s as good as it gets. Nothing is tougher,” Potter raves. “This is where the future is.” Previously, repairing a hole in a pipe meant replacing one metal pipe with another one that was also bound to deteriorate. “It was just resetting the clock,” Sousa explains. He points out further that condominiums in particular were vulnerable because many were built with a type of copper pipe that is no longer up to code for new construction. “With Trenchless Technology, we can stop the corrosion of copper pipes from happening forever,” he says. With this technology, once the strategic cut is made, corrosion is blown out of the pipe and then the epoxy lining is inserted. “We can do pipes as small as 1/2-inch or up to 12 inches. We can go in and coat the potable system for an entire building with minimal disruption,” he says. Potter adds that the ADVERTISEMENT
