Ask a Busy Person
Why did you decide to go into law?
My parents were university professors.
I grew up in academia and knew I didn't
want to do that. A lot of my college
friends were going to Wall Street at
the time, but that wasn't for me either.
I wanted an advanced degree and the
things I enjoyed most in college-writing, reading, and speaking-pointed
towards law.
What led you to specialize in condominium law? After graduating
from law school, I worked for one of the
top law firms in the country with over
1,000 lawyers, as part of a team doing
complex litigation for major corporate
clients. I learned a lot by watching
and working under tremendous trial
lawyers. The experience was great.
But working for this large firm and
representing huge corporate clients
was also a bit like working on the Death
Star-it was often a cold and dark place,
and I knew I didn't want to be there for
my entire career. My wife and I were
living in Princeton, N.J., at the time
and starting to have children. When
I decided to change firms, we asked
where we would move if we could move
anywhere. We picked New England,
to be closer to family and to
Maine, where we
spend a lot of time.
So, we relocated to
Duxbury, Mass.
I knew I wanted to work for a smaller
firm with more client contact and a
friend recommended Marcus, Errico,
Emmer & Brooks. They were looking
for a litigation attorney and took me on.
What do you like most about this
area of the law? Most attorneys say
they like the variety and I agree. You
can go from a tiny dispute to a multimillion-dollar construction defect case
that you might work on for five years.
But I also like the fact that you're
working on issues that affect and help
real people. There is no better feeling
than helping a cash-strapped condominium association win a big settle-

What do you do in your spare
time? I have three kids-9, 6, and 10
months-who get a lot of my attention.
I also love to read-I buy way more
books than I have time to read. I'm a
film buff-I like all kinds of movies,
especially the classics.
I'm an avid runner,
I took up skiing
a few years ago,
and my wife and
I are learning to sail
this summer. Basically, if I can
get outside with my family with the
screens turned off, I am happy.
How did you get involved in CAI-NE
and why is that important to you?
I knew when I started specializing in
condominium law that CAI was the
organization to join. It's a great forum
for meeting other attorneys and other
industry professionals. I also know
that being involved in this industry
and being successful means giving
back-sharing knowledge and helping
others. I enjoy the interaction and relationships with other members, and I

You represent associations involved in litigation.
What mistakes do you see boards
making that may get them into
fights they could avoid? They are
often penny-wise and pound-foolish.
They defer needed maintenance and
end up with costly renovations or potential liability. They don't consult an
attorney before signing a big vendor
contract, and so they don't get the protections they need. The small amount
they save by not consulting attorneys
or other professionals up front can
end up costing them thousands of
dollars and a lot of heartbreak down
the road. The other serious mistake
that I see some board members make
is failing to follow their governing
documents. That's an invitation for
lawsuits, and some condominium
owners are extremely litigious.
What would it surprise
people to know about you?
All through college and during
part of law school, I played
trombone in a ska/funk
band, including in
New York City
for a while.
What's the best advice you ever
got, and from whom? A friend
told me to try and focus on keeping
my own side of the street clean and
not trying to change other people,
places, and things.
What advice would you give attorneys going into condominium law?
Find a good mentor. I did when I
started in the field, and I now try to be
a good mentor to the associates in my
own law firm.
