Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to introduce this special issue of
MD Conference Express® which presents the official
peer-reviewed highlights from the 2013 International Stroke
Conference (ISC) held February 6-8, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The ISC provides a unique forum for colleagues with a
wide range of research interests and expertise in stroke
pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and
rehabilitation to gather and exchange ideas. MD Conference
Express provides an update on the key topics in stroke and
cerebrovascular disease which were presented at the live conference and a window
into new aspects of clinical care and research.
A record number of submitted abstracts resulted in more than 1300 presentations
exploring basic, clinical, and translational sciences. The presentations selected for
this issue were chosen for their novelty and importance to stroke care providers and
other interested clinicians. Clinical trial highlights contained in this issue include
results from a second arm of the Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes
trial, which looked at aggressive blood pressure–lowering to prevent recurrence
in patients with recent lacunar stroke; the Randomized Evaluation of Carotid
Occlusion and Neurocognition trial, which explored cognitive outcomes from
extracranial-intracranial bypass surgery among patients with symptomatic internal
carotid occlusion in the Carotid Occlusion Surgery Study; as well as an in-depth look
at the main results of the long-anticipated IMS-III trial which was stopped early for
futility without any serious safety concerns.
Feature articles highlight recent stroke-related guideline updates as well as an
overview of what is new in key areas of stroke research. Selected update articles
delve into new strategies to detect cardioembolic stroke, novel anticoagulants for
stroke prevention, and epidemiology, clinical features, and the effectiveness of
thrombolytic treatment in patients with wake-up stroke.
It is our hope that MD Conference Express will serve you well as a reference
document for some of the exciting research presented at the live conference and
will highlight areas that you may wish to further investigate in depth. Please visit us
