New Workshops Address Key Business Issues
By Robert J. Loderstedt, President & CEO of New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program, Inc.
The ground rules for conducting business can be very complicated. Rules and regulations change; keeping abreast of them can be a challenge. New opportunities arise that can help a business thrive, yet many times business owners are not aware of those opportunities. The New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program, Inc. (NJMEP) has created a very special series of workshops to raise awareness of these opportunities and to help businesses navigate the complex waters of everchanging rules and regulations. NJMEP’s workshop topics range from Environmental Regulation & Permitting in NJ, Immigration Regulation to New Jersey Financial Assistance Programs. This series of ten new workshops are offered throughout the year, many are free, while others are offered at a very low cost. Workshop participants can learn the latest information on the evolving HR and legal issues in a computerized workplace and exporting products, or learn how to market products and services to federal, state and local government agencies. Energy costs are a big ticket item for many businesses. NJMEP offers a session that will discuss the availability of energy audits and introduce two key organizations, New Jersey SmartStart Buildings and The Center for Advanced Energy Systems, that can assist with energy related issues and reducing costs. For one manufacturer, simple steps such as installing timers on lights and motion-sensing switches to reduce electricity costs resulted in a savings of over 90k kilowatt hours of electricity over the previous year’s usage. These changes resulted in a 6 percent savings in utility consumption, a significant cost savings to any business. Interested in financial assistance? Representatives from NJDOL and EPA will explain the programs that are available 28
through their organizations and provide guidance on how to apply for the appropriate programs that can provide financial assistance for introducing new processes or training a company’s workforce. Manufacturers that have been impacted by foreign competition can attend a workshop to learn about Trade Adjustment Assistance for Firms, a federal program that helps pay for projects that will improve a firm’s competitiveness. Attendees will get updated on how the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act expanded eligibility criteria for the TAA program to allow service firms to qualify for assistance. For those working in healthcare wishing to streamline processes in their workplace, NJMEP offers two workshops: Lean Medical Office, a comprehensive workshop that informs participants of common sense lean business principles and Lean Hospital, an eight-hour introductory workshop for hospital employees who would like to improve the efficiencies and effectiveness of their organizations. Both workshops include LIVE Simulation. In addition to its new workshops, NJMEP offers process improvement workshops to help companies introduce Lean Principles into their operations. Principles of Lean Manufacturing and NJMEP’s Lean Food Production are eight-hour workshops that combine comprehensive classroom presentation with hands-on simulation of a production facility. Lean Tools for the Office applies Lean concepts to office and administrative processes in a simulated office environment. Workshops with simulations give participants the opportunity to quickly identify bottlenecks in a process and test solutions to eliminate them. Introducing responsible environmental practices into a business is not only good for the earth but it is good business practice and may assure a business’ success going forward. The study “Climate Change in the American Mind,” conducted by George Mason and Yale University, indicates that Americans both reward and punish companies based on their actions to reduce global warming; consumers either buy or boycott their products. Many companies are now creating sustainable supply chains. To assist companies introduce

green practices, NJMEP’s Green Generalist (Green 101) introduces green concepts, key environmental issues and the components of sustainability. Attendees learn how to apply sustainable, environmentally friendly practices in the workplace. Like all NJMEP workshops, attendees participate in a fun, fast-paced day that combines classroom-style learning with interactive simulations. Material & Solid Waste Management, Chemical Waste Generation / Green Chemistry, Supply Water / Wastewater Management and How to Develop an Implementation Plan are a few of the topics that are covered in this relevant workshop. One of the biggest challenges for a company is staying ahead of the pack by introducing new products to better serve their customers. That innovation can be the difference between seeing top line growth or a reduced bottom line. NJMEP’s Innovation workshop, Topline Growth (Profit 101), is based on a scientific process and the analysis of the success and failures of more than 4,000 innovations. This day of creative thinking changes the way participants think AND helps them grow their businesses.
