Big Events Mean Big Business
Recently I reported to you on my trip to Indianapolis for this year’s Super Bowl. I witnessed the economic impact and jumpstarted our own planning efforts for 2014 when the game will be played right here in the heart of the Meadowlands. I wrote this piece while on a plane bound for Miami to once again witness another big event coming to the Meadowlands in the Spring of 2013…WrestleMania XXIX! Again I was inspired by just how many people participate in this world renowned event providing great economic impact to area hotels, restaurants and a host of businesses. This has also prompted the State of New Jersey to take a deeper look into its involvement in attracting big events like the Super Bowl and WrestleMania to New Jersey. The Hanson Commission, led by Jon Hanson, a former Chairman of the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority (NJSEA), recently issued another report that focuses its attention on the NJSEA. It made specific recommendations on how it should transition itself into an entity that in fact focuses on bringing events to NJ, both large and small. The report suggested moving the NJ Division of Travel and Tourism, the NJ Film Commission and the NJ Hall of Fame under the wings of the new NJSEA. We think this is a great idea and we like the direction the state is headed in developing strategies to attract business and help rebuild a visible profile for visitors and business travelers. Recently, Governor Chris Christie appointed his deputy chief of staff, Wayne Hasenbalg, to the position of president & CEO of the NJSEA. This is also a great move as Mr. Hasenbalg has been instrumental in establishing high level “working groups” for events like the Super Bowl, WrestleMania, Formula One, the Ironman Triathlon, and the Special Olympics. Yes, all of those events are coming to New Jersey! In fact, Mr. Hasenbalg traveled with Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno and a collaborative team to Stamford, Connecticut, to pitch the event to Vince McMahon himself. The presentation was so good that Vince awarded us the bid on the spot, something that has never happened in the history of WrestleMania!
In this issue of Meadowlands USA you will find a new feature article called “Meet the CEO” and our first interviewee is none other than Wayne Hasenbalg. I encourage you to read on!
Someone can see the forest through the trees!
Recently I had the pleasure of meeting with Jeanna Velechko, the principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Rutherford. Jeanna is one of those beloved school administrators whose passion for creating an awesome learning environment for her students oozes from her every action. Mrs. Velechko shared a vision plan with me that immediately grabbed my attention. She wants to turn a vacant wooded area that sits alongside Lincoln Elementary School into an environmental and nature educational experience for her students. Brilliant and Bravo! The Chamber has a long history of local community involvement as we are called upon to connect the business community with local initiatives. In this issue, there is a feature story about the project and how you can help Jeanna Velechko and more importantly, her students, accomplish this creative and worthy mission.
