BURNOUT Another year, another WRC driver’s title I wonder if NASCAR is hiring? I have never been one of those people who has the stomach or the hysteria for sports. The notion that you can have a nightly two-hour program talking about stats, trades, wins, losses, etc. for one team, much less one specific sport, just blows me away. I really don’t care how the humidity in alabama has been affecting the knee joints of the Patriots this week. Who cares? This is exacerbated by the fact that between my two other brothers and my dad, I am the only who feels this way. to make it worse, my grandfather was probably one of the greatest football players in Vanderbilt history. but I still don’t like football, live, on tV or otherwise. I guess that is why I prefer racing. With a few exceptions, racing recap shows tend to be pretty boring. You either win or you don’t. Places 1, 2 and 3 get a bit of champagne and perhaps places 4, 5 and 6 get points towards the championship, but that is all. You can talk all the stats, excuses and reasons you want at the end of the race, but if you can’t answer “Did you win?” in the affirmative, who cares what you have to say? Racers only care about the order at the end of the race. The b.s. stops where the rubber meets the road. There are no challenged calls, no do-overs because the defense jumped the gun, nothing. Sure, there are favorites to win a given race and speculation about who has the advantage, the better car or even a better strategy to win (team blocking, anyone?), but really that all is just the shit we shoot before the green flag drops. all this, and I don’t even really like watching racing on tV either. Sure, sometimes it’s cool to watch something new. Recently the naSCaR channel, I mean Speed, has been showing German touring Car and australian Super V8 (which is essentially australian touring Car). This has to be the most exciting racing I have seen in a while: full fields, lots of close racing edging on just bumping your rival off into the wall whilst you nail the apex. touring car is not at all the parade that f1 10 MARCH 2008 tends to be, nor the snooze-fest of roundy-round racing. but even this I can only watch for a bit. I have been forcing myself to watch WRC. I have access to all the recent rounds, and of course I need to keep up on the action to see just how badly Subaru is behind. I try to do this while running on the treadmill (another dreaded activity), but again, my attention drifts. loeb was going win anyway. apparently, the only form of video entertainment I enjoy are movies and video games. If you have not played Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4, do so. bioshock is another fun one. I like the real deal most. There is nothing better than feeling the acceleration of your own car, the joy of cornering as you hit that perfect apex. I may never be loeb or Schumacher, but I can at least be a part of my own reality and not watch it drift wistfully by on a plasma big screen while some former pro meathead waxes ineloquent about God-knows-what. This issue we bring you another modified 2008 WRX. This time it’s from Vivid Racing; this car is exactly what I envisioned the first time I saw the new Impreza. We also have a pair of classic timeattack Imprezas, one from the East and one from the West. Developed independently of each other, they share striking similarities. as promised are photos and coverage from the SubieClub World meet. This was an event put on by you, the enthusiasts. You named the place, you took the photos; now see yourself in CmYK glory. We also have a very special story about a pair of Subaru enthusiasts who were able to strike back at a gang of evil car thieves. There is a lot to digest and even more to do.
