Subiesport Magazine - February/March 2008 - (Page 12) BACKFIRE ents! s your comm Send u backfire@subiesport.com “Why is the BD Legacy always the bastard?” With apologies to red-headed stepchildren I was so pumped for this December issue because I thought for sure we were going to get an update on this car [Project 1997 legacy Gt]! Why is the bD legacy always the bastard stepchild? I saw a post saying it was getting tuned by Subiesport technical Editor tim bailey, and saw photos of it “finished” at SEma, but nothing about it in the mag. I really would like to read something technical about what engine management was used, how hard it was to install, and what the results were after tuning. If this in-depth article is in the works, then I guess I will just be patient and hope for the best. Please, please for all things holy and automotive, don’t just give us a half page gloss-over update and call it good. I have renewed my subscription and will keep reading, but please throw the legacy guys a bone here. I love that travis is having fun with Dreadnought, but just don’t move on to other projects and leave your readers with unfulfilled promises. other than that, keep up the good work! “morrocco88” via the Internet Ed: Ah, the Legacy. Yes, it is the bane of my existence. If you are lucky, next issue will feature photos of the Project Legacy being cut in half by a minigun with me laughing manically at the trigger. Just kidding. The car is more or less completed, but we are finishing up a few little issues, like installing better engine management and fixing a few other bugs, along with a final tune. Stay tuned, as we will be doing a huge final feature on this, our most loved and hated project car. does, the STI injectors should fit. However, you might have to play the O-ring game (finding the proper diameter O-ring for your rail) to get them to seal correctly. If you don’t know what type of injectors you have, look at the rail. If the injector plugs into the top of the rail, they are side-feed; if the rail sits on top of the injector, like on a WRX, they are top-feed and USDM STI injectors will not fit. However, USDM WRX “blue,” or JDM STI “pink” injectors will. Again, some coercion will probably be in order in the form of rubber O-rings. Lastly, we used the TurboXS DTEC BCFC or boost and fuel controller. However, you have an OBDII car, which has a much more sophisticated ECU than our wagon, which is OBDI. We would recommend looking into a more comprehensive engine management solution like a Greddy E-Manage Ultimate or the new AEM fuel and timing controller. Good luck with your project, and keep reading; we have some big plans in store for the wagon. Saying goodbye to McRae I just wanted to say great job on this month’s editorial page. I think it really summed up most peoples’ feelings, and nearly brought a tear to my eye (but I was at work, no crying at work!). ben, Hodges Subaru Japanese Le Mans lessons I was flipping through the october 2007 issue of Subiesport and I started reading your column. I understand the point you were trying to make; however, you had an error in a fact you were trying to point out. You mention mazda would have won le mans if they hadn’t suffered from a little bad luck. I think you might be a little confused. mazda is the only Japanese manufacturer to have won the 24 Hours, and they did it in 1991. mazda did win the big race “at least once,” as you say they should have. The other thing you have wrong is that they were a big contender. actually, they weren’t. The 787b (the winner in 1991) wasn’t a very strong car. It had a poor showing all season leading up to the 24 Hours, and only won thanks to other front-runners suffering from “bad luck.” The Renown car managed to be reliable and fast enough to pull off the win, but they weren’t expected to. You might have meant toyota and their Gt-one. In 1999 they were a strong contender and they came in second overall behind bmW. but they pulled out of endurance racing shortly after and turned to formula 1. Chris via the Internet Ed: Thanks for clearing that up. Despite the fact that Japanese marques have contested and been victorious in every form of “European” motorsport, for some reason the Euro-snobs don’t give the Asian marques the respect they deserve. Turbo inspirational So, I have a 1997 obS and really want to turbo it. Your write-up on the l really is pointing me in the right direction, but I had a few questions. first, what did you do with the breather on the intercooler? It looks like it goes into the throttle body, but I can’t tell. Second, do you think those StI injectors would “drop” into my fuel rails? You may not have a clue, but it would be nice to know before I drop the money on those things. Third, I am slightly confused about which DtEC you used. Is it just the DtEC bC, or is it the bCfC? I know you used it to control the fuel, so the answer is obvious, but I wish there was some secret you knew that turboXS does not. Well, great job of inspiring me to do something I never thought I could do. I really have a ton of questions about the vacuum lines, but really don’t want to bother you too much. So, don’t reply if you don’t have the time or don’t want to, but any help would be great. andrew Pederson via e-mail Ed: Thank you for your enthusiasm about our wagon, it seems to be the most popular project in the fleet. To answer your questions: The breather, by which I think you mean the BOV, is controlled via vacuum which we tapped off the intake manifold after the throttle body. When the throttle body closes and the manifold is under vacuum, the blow off valve opens. Second, the STI injectors: If you have side-feed rails, like our wagon 12 MARCH 2008
