Subiesport Magazine - February/March 2008 - (Page 20) SUBIE SLEUTHS would try to find the other two buyers in our crowd, which was approximately 100 feet away… I walked by WEStY and confirmed that they were in fact the rims while walking into the burger shack.” from here, WEStY made the call to the police, to let them know that the goods were confirmed and it was time to make their move. “I walked into the burger joint, drained the lizard, and came out,” said nosmo. “Walking back by WEStY, he said he made the call. I again walked back to Chuck and his friends and said that the other buyers were on the way. I noticed an array of unmarked white trucks and other cars moving towards me. I knew the caper was about to go down. I told Chuck that I thought that one of the buyers had just shown up and tried to walk towards our crowd. “Right then the trucks mashed to close all exits, and eight or nine police jumped out with the classic ‘fREEZE!’ one of the suspect’s friends ran, but was caught within the first 50 feet of his sprint with the help of a tazer. The police grabbed all four of us and got us all detained quickly. They did a quick search of me, secured my weapons and un-cuffed me quickly.” Showing a canny deftness that Phillip marlowe would be proud of, nosmo and WEStY had lured in and helped trap the trio of witless thieves. These are just car guys, they aren’t trained professionals or former Green berets, just a few guys who did what needed to be done. The thieves, on the other hand, were not one-time crooks, and nosmo and WEStY had busted a gang that had hit more than the dealership. 20 MARCH 2008 “The suspects had admitted to knowing of having stolen property to the [police], but did not admit to the breaking and entering. meanwhile I stood there acting as if I was in on the bust. The police took a statement from me and told me I would most likely have to testify,” said nosmo. “I went back and hung out with the crew. This all took about an hour once all the suspects were detained. Everyone from the club left while the suspects had to wait for marked vehicles to pick them up.” Recovering the stolen rims was just the icing on the cake. from the scene of the bust, the officers loaded the suspects into black-and-whites and drove to each of the suspects’ houses, where warrants were served. all three suspects were arrested for possession of stolen property. Even if they did not admit to the b&E, their prints were all over the place and linked to other robberies in town, including a stolen vehicle that was parked at one of the suspect’s residence. at the end of the night, the three suspects had been booked for a list of theft-related crimes. nosmo and WEStY had helped engineer a daring raid with no thought of reward or consequences. Without their quick thinking and creativity, the thieves may never have been caught, or at least, they would have been at large longer, able to strike again. There are some interesting points to this case, which at this point are only beginning to emerge. The main suspect, Chuck, was actually a former customer of the dealership where he had purchased an StI. What’s more, he was employed by the parent company that owns the dealership. Prior to his brief career as a thief, he had blown up his StI at the drag strip, then tried to get the dealership to rebuild his engine free of charge, claiming that it had spontaneously eaten itself. again, our friend was foiled by the Subaru enthusiasts in town. Club members witnessed Chuck’s meltdown at the track, and their input led to his subsequent warranty denial. This may have precipitated Chuck’s attack on the hapless StI, instead of just stealing merchandise. and remember that spooky e-mail? Well, it turns out that the IP address linked to the email belonged to one of Chuck’s accomplices. of course, we can’t heap all the praise onto WEStY and nosmo; they were helped in no small part by the complete stupidity of Chuck and his cronies. Why, after being burned once trying to defraud the dealership by the local Subaru crew, would you then try to use them to make a measly $400? Perhaps he had no idea that he had been made once and just figured that the dealer was being difficult. maybe he was just too ignorant to surmise that perhaps some of the other Subie folk at the drag strip might also work for the dealer. maybe he was just plain dumb. Chuck should have read more; perhaps the specter of Dante and Virgil glowering over him in his viper’s pit would have deterred him and his kind. However, their apparent lack of imagination and intelligence seems to be a downfall that a reading of the classics probably would not cure. Thank, then, the will of the righteous and for their deeds in bringing evil to justice. Car thieves everywhere, cower. <
