While this little l box is not an StI per se, it does have the heart and soul of a Subaru technica-tuned machine. The entire drivetrain from the l was removed from the engine down to the subframes, then, a donor 2006 StI was relieved of its underpinnings, and these were bolted into the l. “The car has undertaken extensive modification to the chassis to enable it to be take the abuse the car sees on the track,” said mike. “We completely stripped the car and reinforced the areas we thought would need it and integrated a Calculated Risk roll cage into the chassis. Currently, the car is not street legal.” as the car was taken apart and everything l removed, only the chassis and exterior panels remained from the original car. Since the car was to be a dedicated racer, things like seats, carpets and headliner were removed, as well as all the sound-deadening material, which is just added weight. “We have always had a soft spot for the GC chassis type, and seeing as it was already in our fleet of cars, it was the natural selection given the lighter chassis,” said mike. “The main disadvantage we have seen at this point is the shorter wheel base, making the car more and more of a handful to drive (luckily we have in our opinion the best driver in the business, Goto:Racing’s brian lock) and the lack of aftermarket parts available such as light-weight panels and doors.” The advantage of this chassis is, of course, its light weight; it also will readily accept an StI drivetrain as it is essentially the same chassis as the later cars. Everything is basically bolt-on; so with the StI transmission, diffs which have been bolstered by aftermarket Cusco units front and rear, and stronger 5x114.3 hubs in place, the car was ready to receive its new powerplant. The very interesting thing about this car is that it doesn’t have just one engine; or rather, GSt runs two separate engine and turbo combos depending on track conditions. for big power on long straights, a Cosworth longblock, with a low 8:1 compression ratio, mated to a Gt35R turbo. When the track gets short and more midrange is needed, the boys have their own GSt-custom engine with compression in the 10:1 range mated to a smaller Gt30R. of course, any combination of engines and turbos can be used to suit track conditions, but it is this level of development and preparation that sets the GSt car apart. The engine and turbo are plumbed with a blitz fmIC core with custom GSt motorsports piping mated to a tEC custom intake manifold that is reversed. The exhaust system is a custom GSt motorsports fabricated rotated turbo setup using 321 stainless steel and a burns racing muffler. fuel is delivered via a custom dry brake fuel system fabricated by Calculated Risk in conjunction with GSt motorsports, which feeds two Walbro fuel pumps that fill a GSt motorsports surge tank feeding a bosch motorsports 44S fuel pump. fuel gets to the engine bay via stainless -6 an lines to custom GSt motorsports fuel rails feeding four RC Engineering 1000 cc injectors. a Hydra nemesis standalone tuned by GSt controls fuel, boost and engine functions. a quick look at the suspension and braking systems on this car is a dead giveaway that something really special is going on underneath the homely sheet metal. Suspension tuning takes time, experience and lots of energy to get it right, especially when one is working with an out-dated chassis, so to control the evil inherent in the machine, great care was taken to get the suspension just right. Prodrive spec ohlins triple adjustable coilovers, custom-valved by Stasis Engineering using custom Swift springs, keep the car from dragging its knuckles on the ground. Whiteline front and rear swaybars and endlinks keep sway in check, and just for good measure all suspension bushings have been replaced with heim-joint type spherical bearings. for anchors, the monster l uses Stasis Engineering alcon 4-pot front brakes using Endless CCX brake pads and StI brembo rear brakes again using Endless CCX brake pads. big brakes make lots of heat, so custom Calculated Risk brake ducting front and rear combats heat-induced fade. but it is the exterior of this car that really turns heads. at Subiefest2, where the car made its debut, fans were blown away by just how mean and purposeful the car looked. Granted, it is just an l, but it had every StI on the track beat in the looks department. The car gets its looks from a custom Calculated Risk aerodynamics package, including a front splitter, full flat bottom underbelly, rear diffuser and GSt motorsports wing,. a Vfiber carbon hood and trunk lid shave even more pounds off the already light car.
