Subiesport Magazine - February/March 2008 - (Page 86) TECHNICAL Cooling the boiler tHE PoInt of anY buIlD is to wring more performance out of whatever mundane little box it is that you drive. be it a 911 turbo, or a Justy, we tinker because we want more go; so we strap on lots of goodies like large-diameter exhaust systems and high-flow intakes. In the case of our Project Dreadnought wagon, a turbo as well as all the above has been added to more than double stock horsepower output. but as much as we would like to just hang bigger and better parts off the engine, sometimes we have to step back and examine the limitations of the system. So far, our wagon has responded incredibly well to the power modifications we have made. now with almost 20,000 miles on the clock since we added the turbo, the engine’s only foible has been a stock clutch that is in sore need of replacement. Despite this rocksolid performance, our eyes are on the horizon with dreams of big power. but power means heat, and heat is death, so to combat this we have to do something now. to start off, we are installing a large-capacity aluminum racing radiator by Visteon, supplied by Z-1 Performance Inc. (z1auto.com). It comes with everything you need to install it, although some drilling is required. The idea here is simple. The stock radiator was made for an economy car with about 90 bhp; not exactly a monster. So far, the stock radiator has been up to the challenge, but it has shown some signs of fatigue under the stress of boost and performance driv86 MARCH 2008 By Travis Geny it may be straightforward, there are a few tips and tricks that will help you along found in the instructions. also, make sure that the needed hardware is present. Step 2. Coolant. Do you have the right type? a 50/50 premix for road cars is ideal. Do not exceed a 50/50 coolant-to-water mix. a higher coolant-to-water mix will cause the coolant to turn to sludge, which will fry your engine. If you plan on using water or a water/racing mix, use distilled water. tap and wellwater have minerals that will stick to the walls of the radiator and clog it, ruining you radiator. Step 3. mount the overflow bottle. This is pretty easy, and a diagram is included for proper measurements for you anal types. otherwise, line up the holes, mark and drill a guide hole first. Then use the proper bit, ¼ in this case. The bolts are ¼ by 20 thread pitch; ours were missing, but nothing a quick trip to the hardware store couldn’t fix. Step 4. Drain your old radiator. find a basin of some kind to empty your radiator into. There is a tap on the lower passenger side of the radiator, just unscrew it and let the fluid out. There will be some fluid left in the main lines, so be prepared for that spill. Step 5. Remove the radiator lines. There are two main lines running into the radiator on the top and bottom. loosen the hose clamps and pull the hoses free, being careful not to spill any fluid, of course. Step 6. unbolt the retaining clips. These hold the ing. Since we are sure to turn up the wick, the stock radiator will not do. The Visteon unit is about twice as thick as the stock unit, with high-efficiency SPal fans that can draw more air than the stock units. The allaluminum construction also conduces more heat, so it is a better heat-exchanger. This is a very simple install and can be done in about an hour or so by anyone with a basic mechanic’s tool set. If you are going racing, make sure that you check your rulebook. While bigger radiators are usually free, meaning you can change your radiator at will and it won’t be illegal for your class, the type of coolant may be limited. Some series do not allow your typical glycol-based antifreeze and will require a racing-type of water treatment. Reason being, glycol is rather viscous, and should you boil over it will create a slippery track. If this is a road car, stick to antifreeze. Should temps drop down below freezing and you are running water only or a non-freeze resistant additive, kiss your beautiful radiator goodbye. also, antifreeze is HIGHlY toxic and, thanks to the glycol ingredient, is also very sweet, making it an attractive treat for cats and dogs and even children. While most companies add a bitter smell/flavor, some do not, and any animal that ingests this substance will probably die, so make sure you drain and dispose of anti-freeze properly. Step 1. open the box, read the instructions. While http://z1auto.com
