2008 RALLY GUIDE #5 Driver: Andrew Pinker Co-Driver: Robbie Durant AUSTRALIAN DRIVER Andrew Pinker was almost the 2007 Rally America champion. The privateer gave the factory-backed Subaru Rally Team USA a hard run right to the last stage of the season. Pinker's rally career began in 1992, when he won an amateur rally competition that landed him a ride in the WRC Rally Australia. In 1994, Pinker won the Australian national championship in Formula 2. He then went to Europe to compete and won the World 2-Liter Championship. He went on to compete in Australian and British rounds of the World Rally Championship, finishing first in class on three occasions. Pinker has been part of the Rally America series since 2006. Robbie Durant from Oxford, England, is the codriver in the Rockstar-sponsored car. His day job is being an electronics technician for Red Bull Formula 1, so it’s clear that there are a lot of brains in this car. Tanner Foust. We’ll also run Will ill ill ill l Corry in an additional Open Class lass ass as s car and Amy BeberVanzo in a 2006 2006 2006 PGT car. SS: What do you think of the he he 2008 WRX and STI? Have you ou ou driven one yet? AP: I haven’t driven one, but they had the inspection and introduction of one at Prodrive e when I was in the U.K., and the e car looks very promising. We are re re waiting for a little bit of time for r development of those cars before ore re we make the change, and the availability of cars and parts on the ground is quite thin, at the moment. So watch this space as far as the cars we will have once we get to the X Games. SS: Do you think you can beat Travis this year? AP: Yes. We can attack a lot more. The second half of last year, we played it safe a little too much and were too reserved. I’m quite aware of that. We’ll be able to attack the championship a lot harder this year from the get-go. We have experience at all the events now, SS: Can you tell us your complete 2008 competition plans? AP: We’ll be running the complete Rally America schedule with two cars — one for me and one for which will level the playing field. We’ll have a better idea of tire choice going into the stages. For the events that aren’t on pace notes, obviously we’ll have experience of those roads from last year. We’ll know where all the good spots and bad spots are. We’ll also have recce on more events than we did last year, so we’re looking forward to that. We have an Open Class motor this year instead of the Group N motor. We have built our own cars this year, which has enabled us to make several improvements on the car from last year. 52 MAY 2008
