2008 RALLY GUIDE #34 Driver: Tanner Foust Co-Driver: Chrissie Beavis TANNER FOUST and codriver Chrissie Beavis came on strong after winning the Gold medal in Rally Racing at the 2007 X Games. At the end of the season, the championship hinged on how well this team performed, even though they were out of the hunt due to Foust’s heavy drifting schedule. In addition to Rally and Drifting, Foust also drives professionally for movie studios, appearing in films such as “Fast & Furious 3: Tokyo Drift,” “The Bourne Ultimatum,” and “The Dukes of Hazzard.” We caught up to Foust in the brief time he has between events and asked him about this year’s plans. SS: Will you compete in one of the new WRX/ STI cars? TF: With the Rockstar Team, we will campaign 2006-2007 STIs. They are proven cars, and with only a short break from LSPR to Sno*Drift, we opted not to dive into the development of a new chassis. I look forward to trying the new car out, but we'll have to leave the initial development to the Subaru factory team. SS: What do you think of the new cars — have you driven them yet? TF: I have yet to drive the new STI, but I believe it has great potential as an Open Class rally car in the U.S. Subaru will have a bit of an uphill climb convincing the U.S. public that a hatchback looks cool, but there's no denying the potential of the new Subaru's weight distribution and suspension updates. SS: At the end of the season you were clearly a contender for the championship in Rally and you won the Drift championship. Do you think you could have won both if the scheduling had worked out? TF: I have certainly done the math on this one. While our chances of winning would obviously have improved, it's difficult to say what would have happened at those missed events. If we were able to maintain the consistency we built through the rest of the season, then yes, I think Chrissie and I could have given Travis, Ken and Andy a run for it, and we would have gone into LSPR defending the championship lead. This year, however, the competition has a different landscape. By the end of the season last year it was down to four cars consistently posting top times. This year, with the addition of Matt Johnson, Kyle Sarasin, Will Corry, Antoine L’Estage, and the return of Ramana Lagemann, Andrew Comrie-Picard and Matt Iorio, any mistake won't just take you to fourth; it could take you down to 11th and out of the points. It should make for a very interesting year and a killer showdown at X Games! SS: Do you know your 2008 plans yet? TF: In 2008 Chrissie and I will again try to chase down the Rally America Championship with Rockstar Energy Drink. We will be teamed with Andrew Pinker and Robbie Durant and will be running for a private team. I will also attempt to defend my Formula Drift title and dip into the emerging world of CORR (Championship Off-Road Racing). When you mix in some cool new movies to drive for, the hosting of a new show called “Super Cars Exposed” for SPEEDtv, Baja 1000 and some time attack events in a 700hp Subaru, it's starting to sound like a fun year! SS: You missed the Susquehannock and New England rallies in 2007. Was that due to your drifting schedule? TF: Yes. In 2007 I had two major conflicts in my racing calendar. The drifting contracts require me to be at every event, while in Rally we can miss two. The first half of the rally season was very stressful for me as we needed to finish every event we entered, yet push hard enough to qualify for X Games without going to all the qualifiers! In the end Chrissie and I did end up finishing every event we started and barely earned our invite to X Games!
