2008 RALLY GUIDE 8 RALLY GUIDE D EVENTS THE Rally America Series Sno*Drift Rally January 25 - 26 Atlanta, Mich. As the name indicates, the Rally America season starts off in the frigid forests of Michigan in January. Snow and ice on the roads challenge the teams in an event that is unique on the Rally America calendar. Most importantly, this event separates the serious contenders from the fair-weather rallyists right out of the gate. Teams attend Sno*Drift because they must if they want to win the championship. This year, the win went to Antoine L’Estage, paired with top codriver Nathalie Richard in a highly-modified Hyundai Tiburon. Fast, tight roads are the hallmark of the 100 Acre Wood Rally. Here, Ken Block tackles a stage in 2007. three might make an appearance. Teams must also be prepared to face night stages at this event. This year’s snow-covered event was won by Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino in their 2007 STI. 100 Acre Wood February 22 - 23 Salem, Mo. The Ozark Mountains are renowned for their fast, tight roads and the close competition. As must be expected in February, weather is as much a factor at 100 Acre Wood as it is at Sno*Drift. Rain, hail, snow, or all Olympus Rally April 19 - 20 Pomeroy, Wash. Switching dates with Oregon Trail this year, the renowned Olympus Rally (at one time a stop on the WRC schedule) normally brings competitors to the beautiful Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. For 2008, however, Olympus will be running out of Pomeroy, Wash., giving the event a whole new flavor. Typically wet and cold, but always treacherous. The Oregon Trail rally features rough roads, massive elevation changes and a spectator stage at Portland International Raceway. Oregon Trail Rally May 16 - 18 Hillsboro, Ore. Some of the most treacherous roads in the Rally America circuit are traversed at the Oregon Trail Rally. Set in Oregon’s Coast Range mountains, teams face individual stages that climb or fall thousands of feet in a few short miles. This event also features an evening of Super Special spectator stages at Portland International Raceway. Susquehannock Trail June 7 Wellsboro, Penn. Susquehannock Trail is renowned for its smooth, slippery roads, and because the entire event is squeezed into a single day, with many of the stages running late 56 MAY 2008
