But when you shake off the big s city and get up onto the Klondike Highway, c it’s a whole new world. You might encounter i the odd Barney Fife in Dawson City or Inuvik, t but in the hundreds of miles between monob equine towns, they don’t have cops because e there’s no one there to police. It’s just you and t the caribou and the ice road truckers. t This goes a long way to explain the popularity of the Alcan 5000 Winter Rally. Twentyl four cars entered this year’s Alcan event. Enf tries included an antique Saab 900 Turbo, a t smattering of BMWs and Audis, a couple Mits subishi SUVs, a big-ass Dodge diesel pick-ems up truck, and over a dozen Subarus. u The most popular choice for an Alcan rig is a Forester, which makes sense. They’re sporty, roomy, and capable. Subiesport regular Paul r Eklund of Primitive Racing Enterprises and his E HO! C rally partner Kala Rounds took a champagne gold 2004 FXT. “It’s close to the perfect Alcan car: good ground clearance for snowy roads and off-road excursions, good handling for ice races and winding mountain roads, good storage room for all our gear, and plenty of power from the boxer motor,” Eklund says. “More importantly, it’s got butt heat,” adds Rounds. The complete Alcan Subaru census shows five Foresters (four of them XT models), four WRXs, a 2005 Impreza wagon, and a 1999 2.5RS GM6 Coupe. The GM6 was piloted by Alcan veterans Greg Hightower, Russ Kraushaar and Gary Webb. Yes, three guys and all their gear in a two-door Impreza for ten days. The smell alone defies description. The event takes off from Seattle and leaves a trail of outraged hoteliers, happy barmaids, and puzzled wildlife all the way to Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories. At almost 70 degrees North latitude, it’s as far north as you can drive a car in Canada. Only Prudhoe Bay, Alaska is farther north and still reachable by car. The first four days of the rally barely merit description. You just have to get over the border and work your way north through British Columbia.
