If the Arctic Circle is in the middle of nowhere, and it is, then Tuk is the far edge of nowhere. Look north from this point and there’s nothing but ice until north becomes south and people speak Russian at you. But if you made it this far, then you did it. You reached the end of all roads. Then you turn around and drive back. More spins on the ice road — but most of these are intentional — and more miles of the Dempster Highway all the way back to Eagle Plains. Getting naked at the Arctic Circle is optional this time. Now, the Eagle Plains Hotel bills itself as “an oasis in the wilderness” — and I suppose that’s true enough. We found that mice had been storing sunflower seeds under the pillows in our beds, but we didn’t tell the manager for fear she’d charge us for a snack. The Eagle Plains hotel is famous for one thing and one thing only: the dreaded, spoken-in-hushed-whispers, Eagle Claw drink. They cost $8 each, but you get to keep the little glass as a souvenir, and the glass is printed with a big ol’ eagle claw grabbing a guy off his barstool. They won’t tell you what’s in it, but the drink tastes like a Mudslide with extra vodka. It goes down easy. Too easy. If you make it to Eagle Plains and you find yourself in the bar, you listen to ol’ Darl — stop at four. Don’t argue; it’s for your own good. We know, because on the night the Alcan Rally stayed there, another great record was made: we drank the place dry.
