That’s our story and there’s none w left alive to tell it otherwise. le We came home by way of Whitehorse and a second round at the ice racing course, and the same WRX crew took the top time again. th h Then we paid a visit to Liard Hot Springs in B.C. to take the sulfurous waters of hell. I’m B under oath not to tell you much about that, u but at nine days into the rally the hot springs b smelled better than most of the rallyists. s Then we rallied some more. But when you’re back in the land of enforced speed limy its, the fragile beauty that is the soul and magic i of the Arctic just isn’t there. Still, in any rally there are results, and the Alcan results are predictable. It was an t all-Subaru podium, led by the 2.5RS of Greg Hightower, Gary Webb, and Russ Kraushaar. H The SUV class was won by the 2008 Forester XT team of R. Dale Kraushaar and Glenn WalX lace. Paul Eklund and Kala Rounds won the l Stock Odo class by a wide margin, followed by Steve Perret and Kathryn Hansen in their 2005 2.5RS. In fact, Subaru drivers won every class except 2WD, and the team competition as well. “I got to see performances by, and meet, Miss Nude BC and Miss Molson Canadien, I was abducted by a troupe of real Can-Can girls, I was fortunate enough to parade around the Arctic Circle in a bikini, and drink enough Eagle Claw shots in Eagle Plains to put my competitors down for the night. And in Dawson Creek I ended up in a taxi barhopping with seven young oil-rigger workers, drinking and headbanging to Bon Jovi’s Bad Medicine. And that’s what dreams are made of,” Rounds says. I’d like to believe we all learned something about ourselves on this event. In my case I learned how many Eagle Claws not to drink. But more importantly, we learned how not to hit our fellow drivers when they’re planted in a snow bank, how to goad someone into making a terrible mistake on the ice, and how to get to the hotel first while there’s still some hot water.
