Now, I can’t complain too much. Most of my time has been spent either driving or working on cars in some fashion or another. But it can get a little tedious at times especially when it isn’t your car that is being worked on but someone else’s. But that is beside the point. While all this wrenching was going on, it gave me a chance to really think about all that we do to our cars and why we do it. There are two basic reasons that I identify with. The first and most base reason is to go faster. Faster can mean lots of different things; there is faster in a straight line, faster through the corners and then there is braking more quickly and shorter. Of course this relates directly to installing larger turbochargers, larger diameter exhausts and big intercoolers, stiffer springs, adjustable dampers and larger brake discs and calipers. All of these parts, when working in perfect concert, will transform your car from ho-hum stocker to within a hair’s breadth of dyed-in-the-wool racing machine where the point is clipping off pass after pass around the track as quickly as possible with machine accuracy and consistency. The other part is the more human side of pushing one’s self in both the driver’s seat and under the hood. While some of us will just swipe the old credit card and hope that a faster car will appear, complete with all the parts we clicked on, some of us play the dual role of driver and mechanic. There is no greater satisfaction of installing a part or parts, resulting in bloodied knuckles and hands, jumping in the driver’s seat and going out on the 12 JULY 2008 track and shaving a few tenths or even seconds off your previous best. Of course, this is all in an ideal world. While building our 2007 Legacy GT has gone pretty smoothly, broken piston aside; building our 1997 Legacy GT was pure torture. Sure, there was that moment of satisfaction when the build was done and the car fulfilled its intended purpose, but the road there brought me to the edge of trading it all in to become an insurance salesman. Yet, it has given me vital experience and tools for future projects; namely, my own 1993 Impreza wagon which is currently engine-less. However, a new 2.5-liter that was assembled by myself is done and ready to be dropped into the engine bay, first things first, we have to finish this issue. You Legacy fans are in for quite a treat. We have three different generations of Legacy sedans featured in this issue starting with a first-generation Australian Liberty RS Turbo. We also have the exciting conclusion to our 1997 Legacy GT Royal Purple build and a huge section on building-up our 2007 Legacy. If you are thinking of building a new engine for any Subaru, this is a must-read. The racing and driving season is here. The days are getting warmer and longer and it won’t be long till summer is here. It’s time to wrap up winter projects and see that our cars are ready to put rubber to tarmac and start whittling away at those personal bests.
