But before that could happen, we needed to address the suspension, which was a bit sloppy. Years of heat and torment had basically rendered the struts, bushings and just about everything else toast. To remedy this, we called the good folks at Global Performance Parts, the U.S. master distributor for Whiteline suspension components. To help out the tired chassis, Whiteline donated front and rear sway bars with their rear heavy-duty mounts and bushings, endlinks, rear subframe lockdown kit, anti-lift kit, front and rear strut tower bars and rear-diff bushing kit. To this we initially added a set of H&R coilovers that were at one time on our project 2.5RS. The cool thing about the BD Legacy is that it shares its chassis with the Impreza, so many of the parts that work on a WRX or GC chassis Impreza, will work on this generation of Legacy. This is not the case for later Legacy chassis, as Subaru made significant changes after 1999. With the new suspension installed, the car was transformed. If you don’t have the money for big power mods, invest in suspension pieces; they will transform your car, and the Whiteline components are top-notch. Having a sorted driveline and suspension is a great place to start, but driving human ambition is power, and the more the better. To that end, Perrin Performance was approached. Perrin produces all manner of go-fast kits, from suspension components to exhausts and turbo kits. We were most in- terested in their rotated-mount turbo kits, which are made specifically for the GD WRX and STI. Since our Legacy has much in common with the newer model Impreza, we reasoned that the turbo kit would fit reasonably well and would be a great way to make more power. We were right. The Perrin turbo kit consists of an uppipe, turbo, downpipe and external wastegate and intake. All of this will bolt into your stock WRX pretty as you please. While Perrin is known for their use of GT30R and GT35R turbos, they had been experimenting with the smaller Garrett GT2860RS “Disco Potato” turbo. Since we were not aiming to do the same old thing, we decided to give this smaller but very efficient turbo a try. Because we did not have a turbo manifold stock, 36 JULY 2008
