With just 1,000 miles on the block, the car seemed to be cursed. In the meantime we decided that it was time to get cracking again, since the car had sat, engineless, in Jeff ’s field for the past six months or so. To this end, we decided the first step was to repair the body kit and get a new paint job. To do this, we turned to JMI Motoring in Arlington, Wash. JMI is the same crew that painted and did the amazing bodywork to Phil Grabow’s 2006 STI after it had seen its share of the countryside during the 2006 time attack season. JMI was more than happy to help us out, so we loaded the rolling chassis into Jeff ’s trailer and headed for JMI’s shop, which is actually an airplane hangar. It turns out their main business is custom paintwork on small aircraft and the occasional show car. You have seen their work on several other cars on the covers of other import tuning rags. Once at their shop we picked out a brand new hue for the wounded Legacy, a metallic purple GM color. JMI also informed us that repairing the cracked bumper would not be a problem; this was the first good news in a while. In the meantime, the engine returned from Crawford, rebuilt and ready to go, and I prepared to reassemble the car, this time in my own garage with my own two hands. While I had never personally done this before, I have helped drop in numerous engines; just never solo. For this endeavor I had to get my own engine crane and engine stand. We also decided that the car needed a bit more attention in the interior department, so we contacted the folks at NRG, which sent along a pair of their EVO seats and one of their steering wheels and quick-release hubs. The NRG bits are really cool-looking and certainly went a long way to making the car look top-notch. The goal at this point was just to finish the car. We had no show aspirations as of this point. But a chance meeting would change all that. Mark McFann, Royal Purple honcho and owner of the car, ran into the boys from Sony at a NOPI event. It turns out that Mike Bryceland of Sony not only is in charge of sponsorships for Sony’s Xplode line, he also is in charge of who gets to be a part of Sony’s SEMA displays. Mike also owns a BG Wagon which is turbocharged with a GT30R rotated kit, and he was very interested in not only seeing that our Sedan was decked out in the latest Sony gear, but that we would have another shot at SEMA. Armed with this knowledge, the pressure was back on to get the car ready for SEMA 2007. With the car back in my garage, the parts assembled and the rebuilt engine standing by, it was time to make our now-purple metallic Legacy roar back to life. Reassembling an engine and dropping it back into the car isn’t as hard as it might seem. You really only need a few ratchets and wrenches to do this, plus an engine crane. The first step was to assemble as much of the engine as possible. This meant reattaching the manifolds, clutch, turbo, accessories and making sure that everything was tight and plumbed. From there, the motor more or less could drop right into place. Of course, just as I began assembling the engine I came down with another sinus infection. Not to be deterred, I swallowed a handful of Advil and made sure that I had cold beer in the fridge. The car went together without incident. Everything bolted back together just as it had done before, and it fired up on the first try. Of course, I discovered that I had not tightened the intake manifold all the way, which rewarded me with a high-pitch screech as air rushed past the intake manifold seal. The Rallitek Perfect Power also managed to ground itself on the chassis shorting itself out, and some of the main fuses. Again we trailered the car back over to RalliTek, who were quick to discover the blown fuses and rewire the perfect power. Another interesting foible also reared its head. 40 JULY 2008
