Much will rest on the Impreza WRC2008 to take the fight back to SWRT’s rivals. Ironically, Solberg made a good start in Italy ending the first Leg in third position. He complained of damper problems after the morning’s three runs but after changes at midday service his speed improved immediately; he was third fastest on the first run of the afternoon. By the end of the day he had done enough to overtake championship leader Hirvonen in the order. Atkinson finished the morning in third after three good runs; he was helped when Latvala slid wide on SS2 to drop well down the order and although he couldn’t match the leaders’ pace in the afternoon he held fifth overnight. Leg Two completely belonged to Latvala. Down in 14th after his off-road excursion, the Finn had clawed his way up to second by winning all six of the day’s stages, leaving his teammate trailing in his dust. Atkinson drove hard but he could not match the pace of Ford and Citroen and had to be content with five sixth fastest times over the day that put him in sixth overall. Solberg suffered a puncture on the opening stage of Leg Two that cost him five minutes and any chance of a podium. The Norwegian finished Italy in 10th but it was Atkinson who, after another difficult day on Leg Three when he failed to make the top six on any of the stages, still managed to hold sixth place and claim three valuable points. Lying third in the drivers’ championship, the Australian is only 12 points adrift of Loeb.
