WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 WRC2008 Makes Debut BEHOLD, THE NEW 2008 Impreza WRC. By the time you read this, the new car will already have competed in anger and we will have a better idea if the new car will be the salvation of the SWRT, or another disappointment. The Subaru World Rally Team has had a tough go of things over the past few seasons and has had to claw every single podium finish out of a faltering chassis and a huge case of bad luck. However, the team appears confident that this brand-new chassis will prove to be the saving grace of Subaru’s World Rally efforts. Earlier spy shots suggested a McPhersonstrut suspension in the rear instead of a multilink which has been confirmed. According to the official spec sheet: “The long-wheelbase, short-overhang Impreza WRC2008 has shown improvements in stability and control, with the greatest theme surrounding the car being the huge advances made in the development of the new car’s chassis. Additionally, the entire body is lighter, with improved weight distribution.” “In terms of engine, the same power plant used to contest events since Monte Carlo, the opening round of this season, will continue in the new car. The design department of Fuji Heavy Industries and SWRT jointly designed the new car. The planning of the body shell was the result of an accumulation of know-how and involvement from every department right up to the present. This also brought about improvements in aerodynamic characteristics and cooling efficiency.” As we write this, the team is gearing up for the Acropolis Rally in Greece.
