Pastrana and Sarasin made a gentleman’s wager on the outcome of Stage 15, and Pastrana collected his dollar. But the karmic wheel had a comeuppance ready. Pastrana/Ringer started Stage 16 with a commanding 35-second lead over Sarasin/Johansson, but a flat tire on stage cost the SRTUSA team almost their entire lead. Pastrana/Ringer finished the stage 34.4 seconds behind Block/ Gelsomino and 31.5 seconds behind Sarasin/ Johansson. So it happened that Pastrana/Ringer started the final two stages of the rally holding only a scant 0.4-second lead over Sarasin/Johansson. A slip by Pastrana on either stage or a great performance by the 18-year-old Sarasin meant the latter could now take the top of the podium. But true to his two-time championship record, Pastrana/Ringer took Stage 17 with a 1.4-second margin and put an additional 2.7 seconds on Sarasin/Johansson in the final stage, to win Rally Colorado with a margin of 4.5 seconds. O’Sullivan/Crouch took the Production GT victory and third position overall, just 6:37.3 behind the Open class cars. Given the stark difference in performance potential, that’s a fantastic drive by this PGT team. Group 2 was won by the talented Michel Hoche-Mong in his 1985 VW Golf. HocheMong’s longtime co-driver Jimmy Brandt became ill on Day 1 of the event, and was replaced with service crew member Peter Cowan for the second day of the rally. The Group 5 win was claimed by John Conley and Keith Rudolph in a 2003 Dodge Neon SRT4. There were no Production cars entered in this National event. Block/Gelsomino finished the rally in a disappointing seventh place, precisely 12 minutes off Pastrana’s lead time. But if you subtract their service penalties, the team would have earned a strong third-place finish. The Rally America season now moves to Houghton, Mich., for the final event of the year. Pastrana/Ringer have now mathematically secured the 2008 championship. This is Pastrana’s third consecutive Rally America championship, and the first for WRC veteran Ringer. With this championship on top of his gold-medal X Games performance, there’s not much left for Pastrana to win in North America, and the next logical step is international competition in the P-WRC.
