Investment professionals prefer relevant, easy-to-find information that takes mere minutes to grasp and is available in plain English, not financial speak. These characteristics were kept in mind as Intrepid Learning Solutions — a provider of learning and performance consulting, outsourcing and research services to global companies — created innovative e-learning content for SPDR University (SPDR U). The work was part of a comprehensive relationship that also includes strategy consulting, LMS selection, implementation, and administration and measurement services. State Street Global Advisors’ Intermediary Business Group distributes SPDR exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and other products and strategies via investment professionals such as financial advisers and brokers. State Street Global Advisors has investment centers in Boston, Hong Kong, London, Montreal, Toronto, Munich, Paris, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo and Zurich, and offices in 27 cities worldwide. The goal is for financial advisers to choose SPDR ETFs for their clients’ investment portfolios. Because ETFs are bought and sold on the stock exchange, it’s difficult to gather information on who’s buying what, and why. This dynamic makes value-added resources and brand loyalty key determinants of success. The marketplace also is noteworthy for a high level of competition due to the explosive growth of ETFs and the presence of sophisticated marketers with a breadth and depth of online offerings. SPDR U is an attempt at creating a new online experience and value proposition. The client base is accustomed to excellence in product and data delivery, but has yet to be fully engaged from the learning perspective. For State Street Global Advisors, SPDR U — named after State Street’s SPDR (“spider”) family of ETFs — is essential for meeting business goals that include: extend brand reach, deepen customer loyalty, generate new leads and increase sales. Educational marketing is said to create credibility, improve satisfaction and has a higher ROI than traditional marketing efforts. This makes a strong case for investing in SPDR U versus other options such as print advertising. For investment professionals, SPDR U is a source for educational content, such as multimedia presentations and detailed research papers. Intrepid Learning Solutions worked with State Street Global Advisors to create e-learning content with a marketing flair — the more appealing and on-target the educational content, the more clients SPDR U will attract. Educational materials are helpful for advisers whose role includes educating their clients on investing strategies. Intrepid’s multimedia learning proved engaging by combining short, userfriendly videos with supporting data investment. EXCELLENCE IN CONTENT • SILVER • PROVIDER AWARD Harvard Business Publishing To maintain its position as one of the fastest-growing IT services companies in India, HCL Technologies needs to quickly groom middle managers to ensure a consistent and capable leadership culture. Harvard Business Publishing helped HCL’s Talent Transformation and Intrapreneurship Development organization deliver the Emerging Leaders program, an ongoing, interactive and scalable development program using Harvard Business Publishing’s Leadership Direct technology platform. The 20-week program covers five topic modules: strategy, customers, employees, methods and ideas. Each four-week module includes both synchronous and self-directed learning. The custom curriculum is comprised of Harvard Business School faculty seminar series videos, Harvard Business School cases, Harvard Business Review articles, working papers, selected journal articles and Harvard Business Publishing online learning modules, mapped to HCL’s business. Online presentations and Q&A sessions with subject matter experts and thought leaders give participants direct access to top leadership specialists. For the initial rollout, 50 leaders were enrolled from four countries, with the majority based in India or the U.S. To most effectively introduce the Emerging Leaders program, HCL and Harvard Business Publishing codeveloped a comprehensive launch and marketing plan to ensure participants are fully engaged. Using a combination of electronic and traditional marketing materials, the campaign familiarized participants with the online environment and Harvard Business Publishing learning methodologies and motivated participation throughout the program. All materials are available online. The program provides moderated online group discussions of materials, and discussion boards remain open as long as participants would like to contribute. Collaborative projects enable participants to learn from and connect with each other; thus, colleagues build a common language and approach for better leadership across the organization. As a result of the Emerging Leaders program, HCL is actively deriving talent from within its organization and has enhanced company loyalty and morale. Participants have acquired a new understanding of core leadership competencies, and HCL has cultivated a sustainable community of leaders. 67
