First, there’s the issue of convergence. As our cover story this month shows, we have evolved beyond the traditional idea of convergence — the melding of audio, video and text — and are witnessing an advancement of technology to the point where everything’s connected and entirely new possibilities are developing. Then, there’s the issue of data hacking and cyber security. More and more IT professionals cite security as the No. 1 concern for their organizations, and many of our stories this month address the growing interest in security-related topics. These two themes represent a fundamental dichotomy in the field of IT today: The faster technology grows and the more convenient, useful and effective it becomes, the easier and better it can be used for malicious purposes and the higher the risk is of data falling into the wrong hands. Now, this dual personality might make sense if you consider that, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2009 represents the year of the ox. On the one hand, those born in ox years are known for being methodical, calm, hardworking and dependable. On the other hand, as if balancing out those positive characteristics, they are allegedly stubborn, ambitious and materialistic. Befitting its reputation, it seems 2009 may prove to be a period of yin and yang in the IT world. Here at CertMag, we look forward to reporting on the balance. What else will the New Year bring? Send us your thoughts at editor@certmag.com and join the discussion at network.certmag.com. Happy New Year! Norman B. Kamikow PREsIdENT Philip S. Wolin GENERAl COUNsEl John R.
