Not only do we have the technology in our homes, but it’s in our coffee shops, our workplaces — even our handheld devices. According to market estimates, by 2012, 1 billion Wi-Fi-equipped electronic devices will have been shipped off for sale to consumers. And Wi-Fi is expected to appear in other devices as well, including digital TVs. However, there’s new wireless communication technology in the works. Through a grant provided by the National Science Foundation, three universities — Boston University (BU), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of New Mexico — have teamed up to form the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center. Google launches Tool to Assess Flu Trends Google searches provide online users with everything from cake recipes to satellite imagery, and now the search engine can offer up information on flu outbreaks in the U.S., according to a CNN.com article. Google Flu Trends is a new tool that relies on two key facts: Google users are likely to use the search engine to seek remedies for their flu symptoms, and Google can detect the U.S. states in which users are located. The tool is part of Google’s new public health initiative and works in conjunction with The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
