Green IT a Priority for Technology Decision Makers Microsoft-HP Deal Makes Live Search the Default Search Engine on HP PCs This year will see a surge in CIO interest and vendor initiatives in eco-friendly computing, according to a recent report by independent market analyst Datamonitor. The information is based on the results of an independent survey that revealed that more than 75 percent of respondent organizations considered ecofriendly computing an important element in their IT strategies, while 15 percent rated it as a top priority. Tighter regulatory measures, as well as advances in technology, are major factors feeding the renewed interest in green IT. Microsoft and HP struck a distribution deal to install Microsoft Live Search on all HP PCs in the United States and Canada starting in January 2009, in an attempt to increase the number of users of the search engine. HP customers will have the option of changing the default search engine to Google or Yahoo. The browser toolbar buttons will allow HP users to connect to online services, such as HP’s Snapfish online photo service. Published reports indicate the move likely will impact Microsoft’s effort to make its Silverlight rich media technology indispensable. Source: InformationWeek.com and Data-Storage-Today.com. The U.S. Army and Microsoft have partnered to create a Microsoft IT Academy at Fort Gordon in Georgia. The academy is intended to “skill up” soldiers on the company’s leading technologies. This partnership was inked on May 13, when Fort Gordon leaders signed an agreement with Microsoft to establish the academy. This is the first of its kind to be located on a military installation. Fort Gordon was chosen for this endeavor because it already is established as a site of IT development. The course content at the academy will focus on skills unique to military roles, and 2,500 soldiers will gain Microsoft certifications each year. Army Partnership Creates First Military-Based Microsoft Academy Intel Creating Low-Cost PCs Intel has shipped some of its Atom processors, known as Diamondville, in the hopes of creating “Netbooks” and “Nettops,” a new line of low-cost notebooks and desktops designed for emerging market countries and the education market. Published reports estimate the cost of a notebook between $250 and $350. Previously, AsusTek introduced a line of PCs using a low-watt Intel processor; the company is expected to upgrade the line this year using Atom. Source: eWeek.com.
