Certification - September 2008 - (Page 9) Project Management The Project Management forums also saw a revival in discussion under the thread, “Growing demand for ITIL and PMP,” which refers to IT Infrastructure Library and Project Management Professional. “I keep seeing that employment requirements are including one or the other or both of these certifications,” junior member HAL9000 wrote. “I would like to move toward large scale project management eventually. Since when have these certifications become more in demand or ‘hot’ in the certification space?” The poster also asked how an organization documents projects so that the hours count toward the PMP. “I am concerned that the experience I am getting won’t be applicable to a PMP due to lack of documentation,” the user wrote. “What role would ITIL and PMP certifications play together? I know they are a different, but they certainly can play off each other.” Forum member ceadmin responded: “Being [part of] a company with 20,000 people, I would say that it is the thing to get. The resident project manager said his test was very difficult but he did pass it on the first try, although he stated that he studied long and hard to make sure [he passed].” “The first thing you have to understand about the SNCP is that, for the most part, it is concentrated on the largely vendor-neutral aspects of storage,” he said. “Accordingly, it is highly conceptoriented rather that oriented purely in the implementation aspects common to vendor certifications from storage providers [such as] IBM and EMC. If you are familiar with such things, think of it like the GIAC GSEC or the Security+. Instead of focusing on narrow technical platform items like the Cisco Certified Security Professional exam does, the vendor neutral certifications look at the information behind how things work, how things connect, how data networks work — that sort of information.” Recently, junior member sachinj posted to the thread. “I’m looking [to obtain my] SAN certification (first level),” sachinj said. “I had worked on Sun Storage 1000, T3. But I’m confused [as to] which SAN certification should be done: SNIA or EMC or any other?” Sachinj also asked whether it would be necessary to do other vendor certifications upon completing the SNIA certification, and if so, where one could access the appropriate study guides. In response to HAL9000’s concern that experience wouldn’t count toward PMP certification for lack of documentation, senior member wagnerk said: “While you may not qualify for PMP status, have you thought about the CAPM, which is just below the PMP?” CAPM refers to Certified Associate in Project Management. “ITIL — now ITIL v3 — is to IT services what the [Project Management Institute’s] standards — PMP, CAPM, etc. — are to project management,” wagnerk said. He added that ITIL allows organizations to achieve excellence in IT services management and makes an excellent complement to project management skills — whether it’s the Project Management Institute, which is more popular in the U.S., or Prince2, which is more popular in the United Kingdom — because the framework that ITIL offers can easily be incorporated into the whole organization.
