Scrabulous Goes Down, Online Scrabble Pops Up IT Giants Contribute to Cloud Computing Research Some of the biggest names in IT — Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Yahoo — made an announcement in July that they will join government officials and academics to develop research for cloud computing, the subset of grid computing that includes utility computing. According to an InformationWeek.com article, experts believe cloud computing will be the dominant IT delivery model of the future. Some of the other founders include international entities such as the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. A total of six data centers will be set up to host cloud computing infrastructure across three continents. The centers are expected to be completed late this year and will be made available to specific researchers around the world. Following trademark and copyright violations, the India-based makers of Scrabulous — brothers Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla — were forced to discontinue the wildly successful, unauthorized free version of popular board game Scrabble on Facebook pages in the United States and Canada. Hasbro, which owns the rights to Scrabble in the U.S. and Canada, filed a lawsuit against Scrabulous in July. According to a report by the Agence France-Presse, more than 500,000 users of the social networking Web site reportedly played Scrabulous every day. But fans need not worry: With Hasbro’s permission, a free, online version of Scrabble has been released on Facebook pages in the United States and Canada by Electronic Arts. Portuguese Students to Receive Low-Cost Laptops E-commerce giant Amazon recently introduced two hosted payment services: Checkout by Amazon and Amazon Simple Pay. The payment services will compete with eBay’s PayPal and Google Checkout. According to PCWorld, the payment options are intended to help merchants outsource some or all of their online transactions, as well as provide customers with a complete checkout solution (for a fee). For example, Techtree.com reported that Amazon’s checkout function features single-click payment and tools to manage shipping charges, sales tax, refunds, cancellations and more. Amazon Expands Online Payment Options for Consumers Approximately 500,000 young students in Portugal will receive state-of-the-art mobile computers to facilitate learning at educational institutions, according to the government of Portugal. The program — known as the Magellan Initiative — rivals One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a nonprofit organization that provides affordable laptops to Third World countries for the purpose of education, according to Arstechnica.com.
