It’s the end of the year 2008. And what a year it’s been — financially speaking. We all watched in shock as the banking world toppled in the wake of the mortgage crisis and as major companies worldwide responded quickly with budget cuts and downsizing. Not suprisingly, the economy then became a major factor in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. And now, with the holidays — or as some like to call it, “the season of spending” — just around the corner, the issue of money undoubtedly is on people’s brains. According to our 2008 Salary Survey, it appears that, despite current hardships, those in the IT profession enjoyed a fruitful year overall. Average salaries increased at a good rate, and it was the first time in the eight-year history of the survey that the salary for an IT specialization in the U.S. averaged more than $100,000. Nevertheless, if the economy continues to tick down, as many experts claim it might, the coming year could pose more of a problem. That’s why our IT Culture feature this month, “The Total Cost of an IT Education,” breaks down the spending associated with getting trained so you can make the best decision given current circumstances.
