TM - August 2008 - (Page 42) insight by Agatha Gilmore Exelon: Performance Under Pressure External challenges easily can impact an organization’s internal talent management strategy , but the solution to a problem doesn’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes all it takes is a concentrated focus on cementing the basics to create leading organizational performance. It’s no secret the energy industry is experiencing a world of change right now. Rising gas and oil prices, increased demand, environmental pressures and political issues are just a few of the challenges utility companies face. Exelon is no exception. In addition to external concerns, it is one of the largest power-generation and distribution companies in the nation, employing a workforce of 17,000 to help deliver electricity to 5.2 million residents of Illinois and Pennsylvania, and natural gas to 480,000 customers in the Philadelphia region. The responsibilities present a challenge for Exelon’s talent managers. How can they ensure the company continually provides safe, efficient and reliable service, keeps customers and employees happy and pulls in its regular $15 billion a year in profits? According to Andrea L. Zopp, Exelon’s senior vice president of human resources, the answer is in the company’s integrated talent management strategy. 42 August 2008 talent management magazine www.talentmgt.com http://www.talentmgt.com
