TM - August 2008 - (Page 46) special report by Mike Prokopeak ‘Perspectives on Managing People’ In May, Talent Management magazine brought together industry leaders and practitioners at Strategies 2008, the magazine’s signature event. The report: Talent is critical, but effective management of that resource is crucial. Talent is a critical differentiator in today’s competitive environment, and talent managers play a crucial role in recruiting, managing and developing the organization’s people to ensure future success. That was the theme that emerged from May’s Talent Management Magazine’s Strategies 2008, a three-day gathering of talent managers and organizational leaders charged with driving organizational strategy through people programs. Built around the theme “Perspectives on Managing People,” the event brought together more than 230 leaders at the Camelback Inn by Marriott in Scottsdale, Ariz., for a high-level discussion and exploration of the key issues facing today’s organizations. Human performance expert and Talent Management columnist Harold Stolovitch kicked off the event by turning one of the industry’s widely accepted conclusions on its head. In his keynote address titled “Ordinary Talent, Extraordinary Results,” Stolovitch told attendees why they can’t win the war for talent and that the key to future success is how to leverage the talent they already have to drive continued performance. Gen. Frank Anderson, president of Defense Acquisition University, then shared case study examples and best practices that are developing from his leadership of human capital initiatives for the U.S. Department of Defense’s 128,000-member acquisition workforce in his address, “The Talent Challenge.” Day two of Strategies 2008 began with an interactive presentation by Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson, authors of Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It. Ressler and Thompson challenged the audience to rethink the way they approach work and how talent managers can respond to demographic shifts happening around them. Afterward, leading talent management practitioners shared insights in a set of engaging panel discussions on “Working at the Speed of Business: Integrating Talent, Performance and Results,” “Talent 2.0: The Impact of New Technology on People Strategy” and “Global Talent Management.” Speakers represented a wide array of companies, including AOL, Avnet, General Parts International, Honeywell, Intuit, Lowe’s, Microsoft, Steelcase, TIAA-CREF Unisys , and Utica National Insurance. In the afternoon, Chris Majer, CEO of The Human Potential Project, shared critical lessons from his work with the military and top athletes and how commitment plays a critical role in driving high performance. The day was capped off with a set of lively discussion groups on pivotal talent management issues, including managing the Chris Majer, CEO of The Human Potential Project. 46 August 2008 talent management magazine www.talentmgt.com http://www.talentmgt.com
