Biotechnology Healthcare - July/August 2008 - (Page 45) The idea of adult stem cell collection may seem out of the financial reach of most Americans, but proponents believe it may be useful not only for people who want to increase their odds of recovering from serious illness, but also for anyone who wants to save healthcare dollars. M ention the words “stem cells” and political controversy invariably comes to mind. Several small but ambitious companies are attempting to sidestep this pitfall by promoting stem cell banks that rely on adult, rather than embryonic, stem cells. The idea is to collect adult stem cells for future use, when such diseases as diabetes, heart disease, or autoimmune disorders such as lupus and multiple sclerosis may strike. It’s “bioinsurance,” says Robin Smith, MD, CEO at NeoStem, a New York-based company that provides adult stem cell collection and bank- An Interview With ing services to the general popRobin Smith, MD, ulation. Ed Silverman, who regularly CEO, NeoStem writes for BIOTECHNOLOGY HEALTHCARE, spoke with Smith about the concept of adult stem cell collection and how NeoStem is putting its plan into action. Q: Where did the idea for NeoStem come from? A: It all began with Denis Rodgerson, one of our founders. He had cofounded StemCyte, a large umbilical cord stem cell bank, and developed our technology for processing stem cells derived from adult peripheral blood. The issue, then, was how to take this to the adult population, as therapies using adult stem cells were clearly showing promise. There are now about 2,000 clinical trials underway exploring therapies based on the use of adult stem cells, nearly one third of which involve autologous use, where the donor and the recipient are one in the same. Q: When did the company get started? A: NeoStem was founded in 2003, but another company, Phase III Medical, acquired NeoStem in 2006. NeoStem was a private company in California, and Phase III made HEALTH INSURANCE YOU CAN BANK ON JULY/AUGUST 2008 · BIOTECHNOLOGY HEALTHCARE 45
