Biotechnology Healthcare - September/October 2008 - (Page 49) TRENDS: SALES Biologics Sales Trends Nearly Double Those of Traditional Pharmaceuticals Amy Krajacic, Senior Editor Global sales of biologics — including targeted oncology therapies, autoimmune agents, antidiabetes medications, and rheumatoid arthritis treatments — grew by 12.5 percent last year, reaching $75 billion. According to IMS Health, sales growth of biologics was nearly double that of traditional pharmaceuticals, sales of which increased 6.4 percent worldwide. Sales of 22 biotech products exceeded $1 billion each in 2007, compared with 6 products reaching blockbuster status in 2002. Moreover, in the United States, three biologic classes (lower right graph) are among the top 10 selling drug classes overall. The United States remains the largest market for biotech therapies, representing 56 percent of total sales last year. IMS says five European countries account for 24 percent of the market. Despite the success of the biotech industry, sales growth is slowing; in 2006, sales increased 18.2 percent. IMS foresees the rate of growth of biologics possibly leveling off during the next five years, despite a strong research and development pipeline.
